These pieces (sold individually) were originally a headboard. That's right, everything i make is genuinely from rescued wood and sometimes that wood is unusuable furniture.
So back to the box and vase ... they were originally a headboard and a cabinet door. That gave me a mix of maple and poplar so when I glued up the pieces I took advantage of the different but complimentary colors and turned the pieces of wood every which way to create a butcher block effect.
And the knob? Of course you're wondering about the knob. When I made the lid for the box, which incidentally can be used lidless as a bowl, I ran short of wood. In such cases I just follow Joe Joe Bean Shop Protocol and dig around in the scrap bucket (and sometimes the trash can) until I find something suitable. This time that suitable thing happened to be a little piece of mahogany that was perfect knob size.
The vase has a removeable glass insert for holding water (and plant material of your choice). The box is quite large inside but does have a small opening, 2 1/2 inches across. These pieces are functional as well as decorative and I can envision them in a country style kitchen or living room.
