Drunken Pine Bowl Rolled Edge

Drunken Pine Bowl Rolled Edge

Wood: Unknown Florida Pine
Dimensions: Measures 6 inches wide and stands 4 inches tall
Finish: Danish OIl
For Indoor Use Only; Not For Use With Food

The variety of deep colors the bowl shows off are very eye catching. The wood came from our family ranch. We are lucky enough to have 3 of the 4 species of pine trees native to Florida. I can't tell you which is which or which one we don't have or even which one this is. I just know it's pine.

Sometimes a branch or whole tree dies or we lose one to lighting stikes or another act of nature. Nothing gets wasted. Either I turn the wood on the lathe or we find some other use for it.

I call this piece "drunken" because of the way I applied the finish. The bowl soaked in a bucket of Danish Oil for at least a week. During that time the finish soaked deep into the fibers of the wood.

Wood that has soaked ends up with different colors and texture than wood that has had the finish applied only to the top. The effect is slightly translucent and the colors are rich. In my opinion the dunken pine has the nicest colors of all the different wood species I've soaked.

After all that soaking it takes at least another week, sometimes as much as a month, for the piece to dry. During that time there is a process of polishing and rotating. It's rather boring but it makes for a beautiful bowl.
